Many questions about Ovid's exile are difficult or impossible to answer: What were the causes of his punishment? What was the role of the imperial family? Why was he exiled, contrary to custom, in a region so far from Rome? Scholars' answers to these questions have been based on those works of Ovid that were said to be composed at Tomis. But to what extent is the information given by Ovid reliable? This work examines the reliability of Ovid's information about his exile by comparing his writings with evidence of many different kinds: epigraphic, archaeological, historical, geographical, and climatic.
